In my book, " Not Separate, Not Equal" Malene and the other students have their first day at the new school. Kids look at them as they walk down the halls, with the same look of anger, and disgust on their face. It also represents how at that period in time the topic of segregation was somewhat controversial between feeling sympathetic or for some reason offended by a black person. From the beginning of my book it says "Thank you, "she stammered, brushing dirt from her dress as she rose. Then, turning toward the car, she braced herself for the laughter she figured would be coming from the teenage girl. To he surprise, however, the girl's eyes were filled with pity. " You all right, honey?" the woman asked , touching the Negro girl's shoulder.".

The historical event occurring in my novel is the 'Civil Rights Movement'. In my book the storyline follows Malene in Georgia of 1960's , she is one of 6 African American kids are attending a public high school. At the school, the students will experience racism, hatred, and witness the beginning of the civil rights movement. It relates to the historical event because it goes through all the hate and segregation of that time period that all black people had to suffer through, no matter their age. The citizens in that community don't believe there's anything wrong with their actions.Whereas from Malene's perspective everyone hates her, she isn’t normal, and doesn’t belong at that school. Which is how things were during the movement. And this novel really helps putting that into perspective.
